Many of you may have seen the recent documentary on the BBC and the related stories shared across social media about ‘Turkey Teeth’.
A spotlight has been put on the disaster dentistry that can occur when individuals travel abroad for dental treatment.
One of the common themes is individuals who have had crowns fitted abroad, after having their teeth filed down significantly in the process. Often crowns can be avoided and the same goal can be achieved without being destructive to your natural teeth. At Christchurch we are advocates for minimally invasive dentistry and believe in most instances you don’t need to remove significant portions of your teeth to achieve your perfect smile. Removing large areas of your teeth can also create additional dental problems such as sensitivity, abscesses and tooth death that requires further intervention. Crowns should be a last resort.
Unfortunately, not all countries have the same standards and regulations as the UK. The quality of materials used may be inferior and aftercare may not be as thorough or non-existent. Additional travel back to the country the treatment was carried out may also be necessary and this can be a hidden cost which is often not included in the initial package.
There are many amazing, highly skilled dentists working outside of the UK or who have been trained overseas, and we have seen some success stories. It is important to carry out thorough research and not be persuaded just by the cost of the treatment. It is important to check that the provider is reputable, the team is professional and trained to the correct standard for the treatment they are delivering and well regulated.
We urge you to carry out research prior to improving your smile. Speak to us before you make any final decisions. We often find that individuals go abroad for treatment without having consulted us first and they later find that the cost was not much different and that we could offer an alternative and less invasive treatment. We can give you peace of mind because our clinicians are knowledgeable and passionate about the work that they provide. They are carefully regulated by our governing bodies so you can be confident throughout your treatment that you are in capable hands.
We are happy to answer any questions you have about your teeth and won’t be offended if you are looking at alternative providers, we would rather know so that we can have a discussion with you.
