Here it is, January 2021, I don’t know about you but right now its feeling very much like 2020. I think lots of people thought we would enter the new year pandemic free, but alas, we are still very much living through it and all finding our own ways to deal with it.
After Boris did his lockdown announcement, I saw many posts on social media saying, ‘that’s dry January out’ and other references to New Years resolutions hanging in the balance.
I have never been one for New Year’s resolutions, I am more of a ‘New Year habit’ person. So, what are my new year habits….
#1 Daily yoga – I have never done yoga before, but I started it just after Christmas and am already seeing the benefits. I have always struggled with relaxing and meditation, but I find yoga helps me to relax and it’s a good body strengthener.
#2 I got a fitness tracker watch for Christmas and from 28th December – 3rd January I hit a step count of 127000, that is an average of 18,000 steps a day. I know that being back at work and due to the dark evenings, this is not sustainable. However, I plan to do a long walk on Saturdays and Sundays and try to hit 18,000 steps on each of these days.
#3 For additional fitness I am aiming to do at least 2, but preferably 3, at home exercise classes a week.
#4 Limit my time on social media and news channels – these platforms create so much negativity. I coped very well in 2020 with the lockdowns and restrictions but facing a third lockdown has impacted me and I need to take myself away from that negativity.
#5 Read more – following on from the previous habit, I am going to ensure that I read a book each night before bed, rather than scrolling through my socials, my phone will be kept out of my bedroom.
It’s easy to set a New Year’s resolution and break it. By creating new habits, I hope that they will be here to stay. I have not set myself any unrealistic new habits, so they are all achievable and they will all have a positive effect on me. Let’s face it, we all need some positivity right now!
